"For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord." - Romans 6:23
In October, Sadie secretly stated journaling every day of the trip on her phone with a goal of writing at least 100 words a day. On Christmas morning, she gifted her journal to Peyton. Here are her cute and fun recollections of Death Valley and the Las Vegas area.

#SadieSpeaks: November 8th
Today was a drive day. We drove through like two states; we're now in Nevada, and this RV park is officially my favorite one so far. They have a gym, a wood shop, a glass shop, and (drum roll please) sewing stuff! So I started embroidery. I did these little bows at the bottom of my jeans and on the back pockets, I did multiple colors of stars. So that’s cute, and also I did some more bows on the front.
Death Valley NP #SadieSpeaks: November 9th
Today we went to Death Valley National Park, and it was HOT. I think I got fried to death, and my last two brain cells got boiled. So we drove up to Dante’s Peak, the point where you can see the lowest point in the lower 48 [Badwater Basin, 282’ below sea level] and also the highest mountain in the lower 48 [Mount Whitney - 14,505’]. That was pretty crazy!
Dad fact: In Star Wars, this location served as the "Mos Eisley Overlook" where Obi-Wan Kenobi and Luke view planet Tatooine
So we could also see the salt flats, and there was so much salt. A salty girl’s dream.
“As we wind on down the road, our shadows taller than our soul” - Led Zeppelin, Stairway to Heaven
We also went to these sand dunes, and it was like a mini Great Sand Dunes [which is in Colorado]. But it was hot.
November 9th: 107 degrees!
Then we came back, and I swear the pasta and meat sauce tasted so much better than normal.
Henderson, NV #SadieSpeaks: November 10th
Today was a drive day. We left the cool RV park, and we are now near Las Vegas. We’re staying at this RV park; it’s nice, but it’s mostly people who live there. But we went over to the Mayes, Mom and Dad’s friends from their church in Guam.
The food was delicious. I spent the night there, and I made peppermint meringues. It was really nice to stay in a real bed and not a tiny mattress in an RV. It was a lot of fun. They have two dogs, and they are gorgeous, but they are scared of people, so I couldn’t pet them because they would run away. Oh, well.
Mom note: Thank you to the marvelous Mayes for hosting us for the evening, receiving our mail for several weeks, and giving Sadie the royal treatment and sleepover. Wish we could have stayed longer and hope to see you all again soon!
Roberts on the Road
For those just finding us, hello! Inspired by the Year of Jubilee in Leviticus 25, our family is on a yearlong RV road trip in 2025-2026 to celebrate my husband’s retirement after 20 years in Naval Special Warfare, as well as our 24 years together during the ups and downs of it all.
With our 12-year-old daughter and 9-year-old son in tow, this trip to explore America’s national parks and beautiful places is intended to help our family reflect and reset as civilian life begins.
Sign up below to receive updates about the trip, along with stories, photos, and reflections from 24 years of military service. We look forward to keeping in touch on this epic adventure.
