Magical Memories in Theodore Roosevelt National Park

A national park in North Dakota we almost skipped became an instant favorite.

“If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God—who gives generously to all without finding fault—and it will be given to you.” James 1:5

I took too many pictures in Theodore Roosevelt National Park.

I took 300 pictures in two days.

What is a picture but a moment in time.

What is a picture but a memory in the making.

What is a picture but a closer look?

Petrified wood with quartz crystals

What is a picture but it’s nice to meet you.

What is a picture but I’m so glad we’re here. Together.

What is a picture but I want this to last.

What is a picture but I’m not ready to say goodbye.

What is a picture but pure love.

Standing at the top of Boicourt Overlook in Theodore Roosevelt National Park, I felt my heart overflow with love.

As golden sunshine splashed on green hilltops and bison roamed freely through the wilderness, I felt the love of the Lord for creating these creatures, this earth.

I felt the love of a nation for preserving this treasure that future generations might also roam here.

I felt the love of my family, all of us recognizing what an incredible place this was to experience together.

I want to remember this feeling of love, this closeness to God. I want to remember this sunset forever.

And that is why I took too many pictures in Theodore Roosevelt National Park.

Psalm 8

Lord, our Lord, How majestic is your name in all the earth!

You have set your glory above the heavens. Through the praise of children and infants, you have established a stronghold against your enemies, to silence the foe and the avenger.

When I consider your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars, which you have set in place, what are mere mortals that you are mindful of them? Human beings that you care for them?

You have made them rulers over the works of your hands; you put everything under their feet: all flocks and herds, and the animals of the wild, the birds in the sky, and the fish in the sea, all that swim the paths of the seas.

Lord, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth.

The North Dakota Badlands

Friends, we were blown away by Theodore Roosevelt National Park. So many animals. Hardly any other people. And the most breathtaking sunsets of the trip so far.

I can’t guarantee that if you come to Theodore Roosevelt National Park you will see and feel these things, too. But I can promise it will be time well spent. That hours will pass differently.

That the importance of other corners of the world built by man will fall away, and the Creator of Love itself will be something to behold.

And I’m gonna bet that you will take too many pictures, too.

Roberts on the Road

For those just finding us, hello! Inspired by the Year of Jubilee in Leviticus 25, our family is on a yearlong RV road trip in 2025-2026 to celebrate my husband’s retirement after 20 years in Naval Special Warfare, as well as our 24 years together during the ups and downs of it all.

With our 12-year-old daughter and 9-year-old son in tow, this trip to explore America’s national parks and beautiful places is intended to help our family reflect and reset as civilian life begins.

Sign up below to receive updates about the trip, along with stories, photos, and reflections from 24 years of military service. We look forward to keeping in touch on this epic adventure.
